We went last year, kind of by accident, and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. This year we were really looking forward to it - especially to visiting St Mary's at Kangaroo Point and The Polo Club in the City - as this was where we were married almost exactly 10 years prior. But it was also due to this anniversary that Guy and I wound up missing the Open House and going to Melbourne to celebrate instead. I gave our VIP passes and guide books to our dear friends Nat and Pablo and their daughters to enjoy instead. Below is Nat's very entertaining report about their day out in the city.

Being a relative
‘newbie’ to Brisbane, having only lived here for a couple of years and
originating from Scotland, it was with great pleasure that my family and I
accepted Bree’s offer of the Brisbane Open House 2014 passes. I had never heard
of it before but jumped at the opportunity to find out a bit more about the
beautiful city that we are now so lucky to call home.

First stop was the
St Andrew’s Uniting Church on the corner of Creek and Ann Street. It was far
from the large blocked, coursed granite churches that I was used to, coming
from the North of Scotland. Instead, a tall, elegant and inviting, red bricked
church nestled amongst the skyscrapers beckoned us into it’s striking
interior. Our guide informed us that it
was said to be one of the best examples of neo-Romanesque style in the southern
hemisphere today and I wasn’t going to argue with that. The arched timber roof
and red bricks where reminiscent of a medieval banqueting hall, even the kids
were speechless, and believe me that doesn’t happen often! My daughter was
particularly taken by the stain glass windows and stood in a trance trying to
work out all the images.

However, for me, the
secret spiral staircase at the back of the church was just remarkable. As we were climbing the staircase to the very
top, my daughter announced that she felt like a Princess in a castle, I had to
agree that I did too. It was just magical.
make it difficult to get to with a stroller and its imposing high towered
Gothic revival style façade is overwhelming.
On closer inspection however, the
interior is spectacular. Unfortunately, we were unable to take any photos of

stunning inside.

It's our 10th Wedding Anniversary so we had a decent excuse.

We walked and shopped and drank litres of coffee and ate some really, really good food.

I did manage to sneak in two yarn shops though in amongst all the coffee. One even served coffee in the shop!

The Unwind Craft Cafe is a very cool space located in Keilor East, not far from Tullamarine airport (if you're heading to the city). I convinced Guy to let me direct the cab driver on a small detour when we hopped off the plane. Unwind have the honour of selling Bendigo Woollen Mills yarn, the only retail space to do so outside of Bendigo Woollen Mills themselves. I love their yarn so it was such a treat to be able to touch and feel and look at real time colours before purchasing.

The ladies here are super friendly and have a great range of classes (quite similar to Side Street Vintage). If you're in or around Melbourne I highly recommend a stop in - great coffee, yummy treats and of course all sorts of craftiness.
Our second stop was in Fitzroy - Yarn & Co. Run by a mother and daughter team this slick yarn shop stocks heaps of your favourite yarns including Cascade and Checkheaton and some lessor known ones such as the Katia cotton cord I purchased. They also do social stitching on a Sunday arvo.
Fitzroy is a cool area so there are heaps of coffee shops and eating places nearby - including Birdman Eating where we met up with my friend Gabby from Gridlock Coffee. It's an easy stroll through Treasury Gardens and Fitzroy Gardens - and you can channel your inner Nina Proudman while you do it - and look at the hospital building they used to film Offspring.

Of course a few things had to come home with me :)
Trying things I'm not confident at or that I've never tried before. I do like to challenge myself in whatever I'm undertaking. When I was 22 I got my first Banking job and it was dead boring data entry. But every day I'd go in and try to beat my score from the day before. It kept me sane.

And now days in my home life and in my crafty work I like to try and challenge myself as well.

I started the year doing a few bits of crochet for charity. I've taught heaps of classes this year as well - something which does tend to make me quite nervous.

The Outing Shawl was quite a complex pattern and it took lots of concentration to crochet it. Once I'd finished it though I absolutely loved it and wore it heaps.

Currently I'm working on a Vest for myself. You can find the pattern in issue 22 of Simply Crochet. I've never really made an item of clothing for myself so it's been testing.
Yesterday I decided I needed a quick win so I tried a little amigurumi heart pattern. I was so excited because it worked and I was so thrilled! I'd never made any amigurumi before and I'm keen to try more now.
So tell me, do you like to challenge yourself? Push yourself out of your comfort zone?. At this time I did a bit of research to find out its age and other information. It came to me from my mum but she wasn't sure how old it was exactly.

When I was doing this research I came across lots of other brands of machines and especially fell in love with the Vulcan brand. In particular the Junior, Minor and Senior ones.

Later that year I managed to acquire a Senior through a local online Auction. A couple of months later my parents were visiting the UK and picked up the Minor in an antiques fair for me.

Just recently I found a Junior for sale in the UK and managed to convince my brother to take possession of it and bring it back to Australia whenever he next visited. Well that time has finally come and I was able to get all my babies out and photograph them together.
Yesterday I had the privilege of teaching 7 fun ladies to macrame. I've been moonlighting at Francesca's Flowers in Paddington teaching various crafts on a Saturday afternoon.

Yesterday we did macrame and made a fun plant hanger. Each participant finished their hanger complete with a little vase or plant pot. We used T-shirt yarn to make our hangers - available from Side Street Vintage.

If you live in Brissie you've got to check out Francesca's. She has flowers (obviously) as well as a few gift items (including some of my wares) plus tea rooms serving the most divine cakes. I highly recommend the carrot cake or the chocolate salted caramel!
A few days later I happened upon this vibrant cotton on sale at Spotlight and thought the colour was a bit of fun.

I wear a lot of black, navy and grey - especially in winter so the orange was perfect.

The pattern took me a little while to get my head around, and I certainly couldn't memorise it, but I did get the hang of it in the end.

I made the shawl a bit longer than the pattern stated, and I haven't blocked it yet either. But I have warn it a couple of times.
We all know Picasso had a Blue Period. But it's so funny when I look back through my photos how they often come in colour blocks too. The other day I noticed all of a sudden I was taking lots of photos of lime green things. And lime green is by no means one of my usual colours.
I thought a nice gift from the class would be a quilt with art works by the children built in.

I cut squares from plain fabric and had each child draw something of their choosing and write their name using Sharpie markers.

Pop on a few borders and we have a cute and very personal baby quilt/ play mat. I finished piecing the top today and just need to back, quilt and bind.

I chose low volume border prints to let the art works shine.

The backing is a bit more vibrant.
Hopefully she will like it!

I'd seen on this blog about icing and decorating arrowroot biscuits. As they are oval they resemble eggs - whack on some icing and fiddly bits and the kids thought they were Nigella.

Mum and I also decided to make Easter Gingerbread. I didn't make a single batch of gingerbread last Christmas and I sorely missed it and regretted it afterwards. So I thought we'd make some for Easter instead. ( Recipe is under the 'my recipes' tab above)

Mum picked up an egg and a bunny shaped cutter and we were away. I did most of the icing of these and Little Guy added the decorations.

Mum had also picked up a few decorations to make up a bit of an Easter 'tree'. We did one each and are having a bit of healthy competition ;)
I can confirm it is a great mag filled with a variety of sewing projects to suit all tastes and skill levels. From mobiles to quilts there is something for everyone. As well as news and handy tips. It does come in a plastic sleeve (which I know irritates lots of people) but on the back it gives a run down of most of the projects within. Each issue will include a free gift as well as full size pattern pieces.
For those of you who haven't had the pleasure Joann's is like the American equivalent of Spotlight.

As I scrolled through page after page of crochet hooks and yarn on their website my attention was drawn by these nifty The Crochet Lite hooks with a light in the end. As they were reasonably priced a popped a couple into my cart. Thinking if nothing else they would be good for a laugh and to add to my growing collection of hooks.

When I posted a picture of them on instagram I was inundated with questions so I decided to do a bit of a review. I also looked online to see what other people were saying.

First of all I find it to be a large handled hook. It stands to reason given the extra space required for batteries etc. Yet even though I'm accustomed to holding 20 mm hooks, the balance of the large handle with the smaller hook size threw me. It's also quite long.

Secondly I am not especially fond of the plastic hook. Usually I try to work with wooden or metal hooks as I find they move more smoothly. I did notice people online referred to them as 'squeeky'.

The third thing I tested was the accuracy of the size of the hook. A few people had mentioned online that they thought the hooks were sized incorrectly. For example a 4 mm hook was actually a 4.5mm. I hooked up a dishcloth with my 4.5mm Crochet Lite and then did the same pattern in a 4.5mm Clover hook and found no difference. Even when you look at the Crochet Lite it almost does appear bigger bit on very close inspection I think the size is accurate.

Fourth - I like the fact that they have both the size in mm and the size letter written on them.

Lastly - the light. On a gloomy day I used the light and found it dazzled me a bit. The light seems to shine around the bottom of the shaft of the hook and directly out of the top of the hook. I found sometimes as I was hooking the top light would catch me straight in the eyes. The one at the base however I found illuminated the work as you went, making it useful for darker yarns. Some reviews had mentioned using the hook in completely dark rooms - such as a movie theatre. I tried mine in a dark room and found the light just enough to hook by. I'm pretty sure eye specialists would recommend against this practice but it is achievable. I also found in this level of light the light in the tip didn't dazzle me as much.

So there you are. I still think these hooks are more of a novelty item for me (referred to in our house now as the lightsaber hooks) but if you were fond of hooking in the cinema or in other low light places you might find it useful.

Do you have one? What do you think of it? And humid. I'm well ready for some cooler weather.

I herded the kids outside this afternoon. Truthfully because I'd spent the whole day cleaning and wanted to keep it as crumb and muck free as possible. Here is a little look at some of the things we saw.

I know this post is a little behind the times but I FINALLY got around to sorting out all our holiday photos last night. I'd done a lot of research about Seattle before we left, having never been there before, wanting to cram in as much as possible and especially because we had the smalls in tow.

Chihuly Garden and Glass came up trumps on most lists of 'must see' attractions in Seattle. And although glass isn't strictly kid friendly I thought they might enjoy it and there was no way I was missing it. I love glass and I love flowers. Enough said.

On every level this attraction pleased. It was a little hairy with kids in tow but there were four of us and four of them so we kind of had them covered. They were well behaved inside and there was enough bright colours and stuff to look at to keep them satisfied. The rooms are all lit at a low level with lights specifically lighting up each piece which seems to make the glass 'glow'. Outside in the Garden the children could stretch their legs and roam a bit more freely (within reason of course - the Garden is still full of glass among the real plants).

We visited with friends who had been to Seattle several times but had never visited Chihuly. Everyone loved it and agreed it was well worth a visit. The location is great too - set just at the foot of the Space Needle and in the same precinct as the Pacific Science Centre and the EMP Museum. There are great passes you can buy which include admission to most of these attractions but I won't bore you here with the details.

Anyway I hope you enjoy the photos. And yes it was THAT beautiful.
As a stay at home mum I find it easy to get side tracked. A few play dates, a coffee, lots of sewing and my week is gone and the house is a mess. So I developed a schedule for myself. It means the house is cleaner and I get more done. I think like any job the role of mother and house keeper needs structure.

Monday now is floor day. I tidy the toys in the lounge room and in the kids bedrooms then vacuum the house and wash the floors. I like doing it on Monday as I then get to enjoy it for the whole week basically on my own and once the weekend is finished it's well and truly due again.

Tuesday is bathroom day. This is one of my least favourite jobs as the main bathroom is the only unrenovated place left in our house. It is really uninspiring and I'm terribly guilty of just letting it slide as I can't face the dated and pokey space. But no longer! Every Tuesday it gets cleaned as well as the toilet and little powder room. Beautiful! And it doesn't look half as bad once it's clean.

Unfortunately there are always the jobs that need to be done every day - the washing up and the laundry. I don't mind washing clothes although (as my husband will confirm) I am hopeless at folding them up and putting them away.

The washing up however has become less of a chore since I was sent a bottle of Palmolive Divine Blends Vanilla & Berries to try out. Think of a lush, beautifully perfumed body wash you might buy for yourself - and then turn it into a dishwashing liquid. Dishwashing liquid was never something I'd given much thought to but this stuff is really yummy. A huge 700ml bottle costs just $4.99 RRP and you really only need a tiny squirt to ensure a huge sink full of scrummy bubbles. Don't do what I did the first time and slosh in a ton of it because you'll wind up with more bubbles than you know what to do with! You really only need a tiny squirt (as per the instructions on the bottle :) Not only does it smell delicious but it cuts through grease like nobodies business.
Last year I had a strict rule (mostly for myself). No more than $10 and I only bought books. I think kids can never have too many books and you can get a great selection for not much money. This year as part of my handmade gift challenge I decided to try and think of gifts I could make for the kids for around the same budget and from materials I already have.

Most 6 year olds I know love to draw or write or colour so I thought a little 'art folio' would be a nice step up from a normal pencil roll. Perfect for taking on trips or just for every day use.

All I had to buy was a packet of pencils and a notepad for each. All the rest of the materials I already had in my stash.
I've made two for this weekend's parties and think this will be my go to gift for classmates this year.
Although I'm a wee bit lazy. I like one bowl, hand mix only kinda things. If I have to wash up multiple bowls and the electric beaters.... too much like hard work ;) Oh and I like basic recipes for which I already have the ingredients in the pantry. No fancy things like sour cream or buttermilk.

I came across this website the other day. An absolute plethora of baked goodies. These carrot cake muffins are TO DIE FOR. (Even without the frosting). Even after I reduced the sugar by half and used olive oil instead of vegetable oil. And I didn't put nuts in as our school is a nut free zone. I've made them twice now in a week. Really flavoursome and light. I keep a few aside for us to eat and wrap the rest up and freeze for lunch boxes.

These biscuits have been doing the rounds of the Internet and I must say I make a batch every couple of weeks. So handy to keep a few flavours in the freezer to take to afternoon play dates or if we have someone over for morning tea. Only takes 10 minutes and you have fresh biscuits. Easier than running to the shop (especially with a 2yo in tow).

Pikelets are always on high rotation here, both plain and banana flavoured. Next up for a treat I want to try this Chocolate Banana Bread.

Got any other good recipes I need to try?Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02512695703223497990noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3052071601293450875.post-12379612080958662952014-02-16T16:47:00.001+10:002014-02-16T16:47:26.364+10:00my American quiltThe second project I purchased supplies for in America was a quilt. I decided it was better to purchase supplies for specific projects rather than just random stash. The quilt will also be used in our loungeroom and will serve as a souvenir and reminder of the places we visited every day. The fabrics I purchased are seasonal and touristy and highlight the places we visited.
The next two lots of fabric were purchased from Esther's Fabrics on Bainbridge Island. I must admit I purchased the donkey and gumboot prints on a bit of a whim. I've been a big fan of Laurie Wisbrun since she started and couldn't pass up the chance to purchase some of her fabrics in the flesh. Also it rains a lot in Seattle!
Phyllis the lovely owner of Thistle Dew gave me this California print when she heard about my souvenir quilt.
Any suggestions for a simple layout? I was thinking a simple log cabin design around the central map panel. Any other ideas anyone would care to share?
First project is a crochet ripple blanket for our couch. We have a couple of quilts I made which we use relentlessly in winter and I've been wanting to add to that with a crochet blanket.
I bought Cascade 220 yarn as it is made in Washington and I know it's available here as well. I purchased several shades of blue and grey with some red for flair at both So Much Yarn in Seattle and Churchmouse Yarn and Tea on Bainbridge Island.

I'm using the Attic 24 Ripple pattern which I've had success with in the past. Since returning home I've purchased some more Cascade 220 from Purlwise.
I'm loving the way this is coming together, I reckon I'm about half way along. I want it to be a good size and based on the width it should be. This yarn is nice and soft and comes in a awesome range of colours.
As regular readers will recall, while we were away on holiday my inlaws did a backyard blitz style manoeuvre on our yard. It transformed a sloping, unloved and rocky wasteland into a terraced wonder.
The turf went in a few days after our return and has coped pretty well with our very hot and dry summer. I'm not looking forward to our next water bill though let me tell you!! We spend so much time out here as a family now, kicking a ball and playing cricket or just lying on the grass. The swings are now in place beside the fort.

The garden beds are a slow work in progress but I'm enjoying that. Normally I'm all for running to the shop and buying a car full of plants but this time I'm taking the slower approach.

Along the top in the small beds we planted some geranium seedlings in a variety of colours. I want to also add some which will hang over and trail down the wall.

And along the bottom we've now planted some basil, coriander, chives and 2 types of kale. Although we do have the big vegetable beds out the front I wanted some of these beds to be like a kitchen garden.

On the top terrace we've now also planted another pomegranate and a lemon.

So it's slowly getting there. But I like the gradual evolution of it .
I've been spending a little time each day sewing or crocheting or just generally creating something. This creative energy has rubbed off into other areas of my life too. I've been baking and making yummy food for dinners and afternoon teas.

Last week I happened upon this article about Jerry Seinfeld. The article resonated with me, not for the sticker chart concept, but for the idea that if you do something creative every day then over time it will become habit and become easier. If you want to be a better comedian then spend some time each day writing material.

A day or so later I heard an interview with Neil Finn on a local radio station saying that he 'makes' some kind of music every day. Whether he's writing lyrics or composing music or just playing around on his instruments. He makes music every day to keep his creative juices flowing.

I love the fact that I heard the same message from two different types of creatives. If you want to be creative then be creative. Spend some time each day doing something in your creative field and eventually this will become habit and the creativity will flow.

Heard any great advice lately? Got any creative inspiration to share?
I didn't want to throw them out and having crocheted with cloth before I decided to keep them for a rug project. Fast forward a few months and I finally had some time and an idea.

I cut each pillowcase into thin strips (about 1cm) and started crocheting with a 10mm hook. I found that HDC stitches worked best.

And now it's finished! It's about 1.5 metres across and now is sitting under the coffee table in our outdoor sitting area. As this is made from upcycled material I have no hesitation in using it outside. The deck is covered so it probably won't get wet but it will get dog hair on it.

Here are a few photos of the process. Enjoy :)
But with work, a major renovation and a new baby I had fallen out of the habit. This year, along with my no paper towel pledge, I promised myself that I would get back on the handmade present wagon.

In December we welcomed our first niece. Amelie is no longer the only girl and now has a real life baby to play with :) I made this Granny Stripe blanket for the little poppet. (Pattern from Attic 24)

In January a little friend turned 1 and I made her this Blooming Flower cushion (pattern also from Attic 24).

Next birthday belongs to my best friend's daughter who is the same age as Little Guy and one of his closest friends. She will be receiving this pillowcase dress.

And of course I had to practice the pattern first. Here is my model showing of her new 'lellow dress. Her current favourite colour.

Have you been making much lately? Do you like receiving handmade gifts?

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02512695703223497990noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3052071601293450875.post-34276449556080719222014-01-23T20:29:00.001+10:002014-01-23T20:29:47.126+10:00the 'why I am not completely giving up paper towel' postI've been writing a post in my head for a couple of weeks. Why I am giving up paper towel. As a family with 2 kids and 2 dogs and 2 adults we go through a bit of the stuff. Wiping faces, cleaning bench tops, washing windows and even cleaning outside furniture. Everything. We are fairly environmentally friendly people so I could see this was an area for improvement.

So after participating in the dishcloth swap I decided to put theory into practice and start using them. I resurrected a heap of cloth napkins from the linen press to use and we were away. When the roll ran out we didn't get any more.

It was all going swimmingly until tonight. Until I upended a HUGE bowl of spaghetti and sauce all over the kitchen. All over the floor, me, up the fridge and all over the cupboards. I broke the bowl and covered myself in burning tomato sauce. My darling husband got me out of my spaghetti clothes and gave me his dinner and shooed me away to eat and have a little cry. I whispered shamefacedly to him "there's paper towel in the bottom of the cupboard" as I had discovered a few days earlier we had missed a few stray rolls. So he scraped up all the spaghetti and sauce and picked up the broken bits of bowl. I grabbed the mop and got rid of the rest.

Now all of this could have been achieved without paper towel. But it was quick and clean. But here is the kicker. Our floorboards have little gaps in between them which are now, after the mopping and scraping, filled with meaty sauce. So I folded up that paper towel and ran it between the boards and got all that sauce out before it went manky/stinky/hard.

(And just for a moment imagine it wasn't sauce..... what if it had been a bodily discharge??)

And that my friends is why I will keep a few rolls of humble paper towel in the cupboard. FOR EMERGENCIES! ;)Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02512695703223497990noreply@blogger.com2
