crochet floor rugs

I really like making these floor rugs. Putting the colours together and seeing how the design evolves. I've finished a few lately that I'd had hanging around. They look so nice in the home too on both carpet or hard floors.

This one was made for a modern bedroom with the new owner requesting yellow and a doily style.

This pink rug was also made for a bedroom being decorated in a shabby chic/French country provincial style. The centre fabric is white with little pink, grey and green spots. It's very cute.

This rug felt mammoth to work on. It is 1 metre square as opposed to circular which is how I normally work. So it's a bit bulkier. The floral is a red/pink colour with the occasional splash of blue.

This rug is still looking for a new home so if you would like to adopt it please contact me: meandmy2guys@gmail.com

weekend gardening

It was lovely and warm on the weekend. Even for the middle of winter. The garden has become so lovely since we first put it in. We love spending time out there on weekends and kicking the ball and looking at the garden. Especially now that Amelie is walking she loves having a run around outside.

paper doily bunting tutorial

Bunting is all the rage at the moment as is anything that is 'granny chic'. This paper doily bunting is a perfect craft activity to do with kids, especially if you are a bit 'craft challenged'. It's relatively low mess and doesn't involve any power tools, paint or messy stuff. Perfect for festive occasions or just for a bit of fun decorating.

I hope you enjoy and would love to see your finished bunting.

Ingredients:

Paper doilies
Twine
Sticky tape or staples
Colouring pencils or crayons or stamps or stickers for decoration

Recipe:

If you want to decorate your doily bunting you need to do that first.
Fold each doily in half and then decorate one or both sides. You need to fold them before decorating otherwise your design will get cut in half by the fold.

Now once all your doilies are decorated (or not) and folded, cut a piece of twine suitable for where you want to hang it. Consider if you want the bunting to hang straight or loosely. Leave enough to make a loop at each end if you are going to loop it over something – such as a curtain rod.

Now you need to decide how you want your doilies spaced – all close together or with a bit of a gap in between? This will also decide how many of your doilies you need to use.

Next you need to attach the doilies to the twine, this will stop them sliding up and down or falling off. You can do this in a couple of different ways. (Once again this is where you might need to let Mum help). You can either staple the doily to the twine (making sure your staple catches both doily and twine to hold it in place). Or you can put a little bit of sticky tape on the side.

Or (now this is the trickiest way but looks the best) you can use double sided sticky tape or wind normal sticky tape inside out around your twine (so the sticky is on the outside) and then press your doily over the top.

Ta dah! Some pretty doily bunting!

tourist in my own city -Brisbane

Yesterday I had the rare opportunity to spend the whole day with my little Guy. As parent's of multiple children are sure to understand it is difficult to juggle schedules in order to spend a little quality time with individual children. In the case of the little Guy and I it has been 18 months since we've had the opportunity. But yesterday my baby girl went off to her first day at daycare with an in home carer we have used before and trust immensely. Thus giving the little Guy and I a rare day alone together. We planned elaborate outings involving a bus trip to the city, high tea, art galleries, the museum and a bag of lollies. For me it was a great chance to walk around our city and enjoy it from a bit of a tourist perspective. Being school holidays there was lots of fun activities and things to look at going on as well.

We started on the bus

Stopped for high tea at the Shingle Inn in the newly refurbished City Hall. When I was at school my Grandmother would bring me to the Shingle Inn on Edward St and we would have waffles for lunch -very decadent! She had frequented this tea room as a young lady and it had changed little since then. A few years ago when I was a young woman working in the city they refurbished the building on Edward St and removed the original Shingle Inn. Fortunately though they saved all the original fittings and now many years later they have recreated the tea rooms at City Hall. We enjoyed waffles and a Devonshire tea.

We then went upstairs to the Museum of Brisbane and looked at the exhibits - one about the history of Rugby in Queensland which I really enjoyed, one about Expo 88 which was fun and one all about the Brisbane River.

After a quick sushi stop we headed across the River to the art galleries. The QAG, GOMA, Museum and the State Library host a fantastic range of free activities over the holidays. Little Guy had done the museum last week with Husband Guy so we did the Galleries instead.

Last stop was in Southbank Parklands at the Great Aussie Sweet Company for a bag of lollies. A rare treat for him. For me it was also a treat because as a teenager I worked in this shop and developed a deep and abiding love of fine sweets and chocolates. I still love going back when I can and picking out a few lollies for my bag.

Home on the bus and to pick up the bubba who aced her first day. She is only going one day per week which will give me some extra for spring cleaning and mosy exciting to teach some quilting classes! ! The little Guy and I will also have a regular afternoon milkshake date as well.
